Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, falls on Ashvin Shukla Dashami, the tenth day of the bright fortnight of Ashvin, immediately after the nine nights of Navratri. It celebrates the victory of Rama over Ravana and of the goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. The day is considered one of the most auspicious of the year for worship, for honouring the tools of one's work, and for beginning new ventures.
