The 12 Rashis
A rashi is one of the twelve 30° signs of the sidereal zodiac. Your rashi usually means your Moon sign, which Vedic astrology uses for the daily rashifal, Sade Sati and Kundli matching; your Lagna is the sign rising at birth.

Find your rashi and Lagna
Vedic astrology reads your Moon sign (rashi) for daily predictions and your Lagna for the birth chart. Both use the sidereal zodiac, so they often differ from your Western Sun sign.
Moon sign, Sun sign and Lagna
Western horoscopes use the Sun sign in the tropical zodiac. Vedic rashifal uses the Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac, about 24° behind, so the two often differ. The Lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising in the east at birth; it changes roughly every two hours and frames the twelve houses of your chart. Read the full guide.
Elements (tattva)
- Fire (Agni): Aries (Mesha), Leo (Simha), Sagittarius (Dhanu). Energy, courage and leadership.
- Earth (Prithvi): Taurus (Vrishabha), Virgo (Kanya), Capricorn (Makara). Practicality, patience and resources.
- Air (Vayu): Gemini (Mithuna), Libra (Tula), Aquarius (Kumbha). Ideas, communication and relationships.
- Water (Jala): Cancer (Karka), Scorpio (Vrishchika), Pisces (Meena). Feeling, intuition and care.
Signs of the same element tend to understand each other easily, which is one reason trines (signs 5 and 9 apart) are counted as harmonious.
Qualities (movable, fixed and dual)
- Chara (movable): Aries (Mesha), Cancer (Karka), Libra (Tula), Capricorn (Makara). Initiative and change.
- Sthira (fixed): Taurus (Vrishabha), Leo (Simha), Scorpio (Vrishchika), Aquarius (Kumbha). Persistence and stability.
- Dwiswabhava (dual): Gemini (Mithuna), Virgo (Kanya), Sagittarius (Dhanu), Pisces (Meena). Adaptability and both sides of a question.
Lords, exaltation and debilitation
Each rashi is owned by one of the seven visible planets. A planet is strongest in its sign of exaltation and weakest in the opposite sign, its debilitation.

Rashi FAQs
What is a rashi?
A rashi is one of the twelve 30° signs of the zodiac, from Aries (Mesha) to Pisces (Meena). Vedic astrology measures them in the sidereal zodiac, which is fixed to the stars, so each rashi lines up with its constellation.
How do I find my rashi?
Your rashi is the sign the Moon occupied when you were born. It depends on your birth date, time and place, because the Moon changes sign about every two and a half days. Use the free calculator on this page, which also gives your Lagna (rising sign).
Is my rashi the same as my Western zodiac sign?
Usually not. Western astrology uses your Sun sign in the tropical zodiac. Vedic astrology uses your Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac, which is about 24° behind today. So both the planet (Moon, not Sun) and the zodiac differ, and the two signs often don't match.
What is the difference between rashi and Lagna?
Your rashi is your Moon sign and describes your mind and emotions; it is used for the daily rashifal, Sade Sati and Kundli matching. Your Lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising in the east at birth and describes your body, personality and the frame of your whole chart. It changes about every two hours, so it needs an accurate birth time.
Which rashi is the best?
None. Every rashi has strengths and challenges, and results depend on the whole birth chart: the condition of the sign's lord, the planets in it and the running Dasha, not the sign alone.
How many nakshatras are in each rashi?
Two and a quarter. The 27 nakshatras have four padas each, 108 in all, and each rashi holds nine padas. Your Moon's nakshatra refines what its rashi shows and decides your starting Vimshottari Dasha.
Which planets rule the 12 rashis?
The Sun rules Leo (Simha); the Moon rules Cancer (Karka); Mars rules Aries (Mesha) and Scorpio (Vrishchika); Mercury rules Gemini (Mithuna) and Virgo (Kanya); Jupiter rules Sagittarius (Dhanu) and Pisces (Meena); Venus rules Taurus (Vrishabha) and Libra (Tula); and Saturn rules Capricorn (Makara) and Aquarius (Kumbha). Rahu and Ketu do not own signs in the classical scheme.
Which rashi should I read for my daily horoscope?
In Vedic astrology, read the rashifal for your Moon sign. If you also know your Lagna, reading that one too gives a second view of the day.
