How it works

The Lagna is the sidereal ecliptic degree rising in the east at your birth place and moment; Rashi and Sun sign are the sidereal signs of the Moon and Sun. All use the Lahiri ayanamsa and NASA JPL's DE421 ephemeris.

Questions

What is the difference between Rashi and Lagna?

Rashi is the sign the Moon was in at birth; it describes the mind and emotions and is used for daily horoscopes. Lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon; it sets the houses of the whole chart.

Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons. They are currently about 24° apart, so many people move back one sign.

Do I need my birth time?

For the Lagna, yes: it changes about every two hours. Your Rashi only needs the date in most cases, and we tell you if the Moon changed sign that day.
