About Diwali
Diwali (Deepavali) is celebrated on Kartika Amavasya, the new moon of the month of Kartika (called Ashvin Amavasya in the Amanta calendar used in western and southern India). The central ritual is the evening Lakshmi Puja, in which families worship Lakshmi (goddess of prosperity) together with Ganesha (remover of obstacles). It is the third and main day of the five-day festival that runs from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj.
