How Ganesh Chaturthi is kept in Australia
In Australia, many families bring a Ganesha murti home on Ganesh Chaturthi, install it with puja at the midday (Madhyahna) muhurat, and offer modak, durva grass and red flowers. The murti stays for one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days, with aarti morning and evening, until visarjan.
Abroad, many families choose a murti of natural clay and do the visarjan at home in a tub or bucket of water, then return the water and clay to the garden, since rules for immersion in rivers and the sea differ from place to place. Mandirs and community groups often hold public celebrations and visarjan on the weekends.
Tradition advises not looking at the Moon on the night of Chaturthi; each city's page gives the hours for its own sky.
Why the date and times differ abroad
A tithi is a stretch of the Moon's journey from the Sun, so it begins and ends at the same instant everywhere. In 2027, Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi begins at 02:20 PM IST on 3 September in India, which is 06:50 PM AEST on 3 September in Sydney.
What differs is the local day: sunrise, sunset and the clock. Ganesh Chaturthi is kept on the day the tithi covers the local midday (Madhyahna), so each city has its own times; and because the clocks differ, the tithi can begin on a different local date, so a city can keep the festival a day apart from India. Both dates are right for their place.
