About Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti marks the day the Sun moves into sidereal Capricorn (Makara). Unlike most Hindu festivals it follows the solar calendar, not a lunar tithi, which is why it falls on nearly the same date every year. It is dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and is celebrated across India as a harvest festival under many local names.
