Moon in Vedic Astrology

The mind, emotions, mother and the rashi your horoscope is read from.

Chandra is the mind (manas) and the most personal graha in Jyotish. Your Moon sign is your rashi: daily rashifal, Kundli matching, the Vimshottari Dasha, Sade Sati and Chandrashtama are all counted from it. A steady Moon gives emotional balance, memory and a nurturing nature.

Common questions

Moon FAQs

Why do Vedic horoscopes use the Moon sign?

In Jyotish the Moon is the mind and daily experience, so transits, the daily rashifal, Kundli matching and the Vimshottari Dasha are all counted from the Moon sign (Janma Rashi).

Do I need my birth time to find my Moon sign?

Often not. If the Moon stayed in one sign all day, the date and place are enough. On days when it changes sign, the birth time decides it.

What is a Moon nakshatra?

The Moon's nakshatra (birth star) is one of 27 lunar mansions of 13°20′. It sets your first Vimshottari Dasha, your naming syllable and much of Kundli matching.

Which sign does Moon rule?

Moon (Chandra) rules Cancer (Karka).

Where is Moon exalted and debilitated?

Moon is exalted in Taurus (Vrishabha), most deeply at 3°, and debilitated in Scorpio (Vrishchika). Dignity is one factor; house, aspects and the dasha also shape results.

How long is Moon Mahadasha?

10 years in the Vimshottari system. Each of its nine Antardashas lasts in proportion to its lord's own Mahadasha years.

Which nakshatras does Moon rule?

Rohini, Hasta, Shravana. People born with the Moon in these nakshatras begin life in Moon Mahadasha.

Where is Moon now?

On 18 Oct 2026 Moon is in sidereal Sagittarius at 21.4°, in Purva Ashadha nakshatra. It moves into Capricorn on 18 Oct 2026.
