How Diwali is kept in the USA
In the USA, Diwali is kept at home and with the community. Families clean and decorate the home, draw rangoli at the door, light diyas and candles at dusk and perform Lakshmi and Ganesha puja in the evening, at the muhurat for their own city. Sweets and gifts are shared with family, friends and neighbours.
Diwali often falls on a working or school day abroad, so many families keep the puja itself on the day, at the local time, and gather with the wider community at mandirs, community halls and public celebrations on the nearest weekend.
Fireworks and sparklers follow local rules, which differ from place to place; many families keep to diyas, candles and lights at home. Dhanteras and Narak Chaturdashi come before Diwali, and Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj after it, each on its own local date.
Why the date and times differ abroad
A tithi is a stretch of the Moon's journey from the Sun, so it begins and ends at the same instant everywhere. In 2026, Kartika Amavasya begins at 11:28 AM IST on 8 November in India, which is 12:58 AM EST on 8 November in New York City.
What differs is the local day: sunrise, sunset and the clock. Diwali is kept on the day the tithi covers the local evening (Pradosh Kaal), so each city has its own times; and because the clocks differ, the tithi can begin on a different local date, so a city can keep the festival a day apart from India. Both dates are right for their place.
