How Raksha Bandhan is kept in the USA
In the USA, sisters tie a rakhi on their brothers' wrists with tilak, a lamp and sweets, and brothers give a gift and a promise of care. Many families tie it in the Rakhi muhurat, avoiding Bhadra, with the afternoon (Aparahna) as the preferred time.
Families abroad often live far from their siblings, so rakhis are posted weeks ahead, and many tie them at the local muhurat with the family joining by video call. Cousins and close friends are often included too.
Why the date and times differ abroad
A tithi is a stretch of the Moon's journey from the Sun, so it begins and ends at the same instant everywhere. In 2027, Shravana Purnima begins at 10:29 AM IST on 16 August in India, which is 12:59 AM EDT on 16 August in New York City.
What differs is the local day: sunrise, sunset and the clock. Raksha Bandhan is kept on the day the tithi covers the local Rakhi time (daytime outside Bhadra, the afternoon preferred), so each city has its own times; and because the clocks differ, the tithi can begin on a different local date, so a city can keep the festival a day apart from India. Both dates are right for their place.
