How Karwa Chauth is kept in the USA
In the USA, married women keep the Karwa Chauth fast from sunrise to moonrise for the long life and well-being of their husbands; many keep it without food or water, some with fruit and water, and in many families husbands and unmarried women fast too. The day begins with sargi, a meal often prepared by the mother-in-law and eaten before sunrise.
In the evening women gather at home, with friends or in a community hall to hear the Karwa Chauth katha and perform the puja with the karwa (a clay or metal pot). When the Moon rises they offer arghya, look at the Moon and then at their husband through a sieve, and break the fast.
