Karwa Chauth Puja: Pradosh. Evening worship after sunset. Chaturthi ends soon after sunset here, so the puja is done in Pradosh as usual.
How Karwa Chauth is kept in the UK
In the UK, married women keep the Karwa Chauth fast from sunrise to moonrise for the long life and well-being of their husbands; many keep it without food or water, some with fruit and water, and in many families husbands and unmarried women fast too. The day begins with sargi, a meal often prepared by the mother-in-law and eaten before sunrise.
In the evening women gather at home, with friends or in a community hall to hear the Karwa Chauth katha and perform the puja with the karwa (a clay or metal pot). When the Moon rises they offer arghya, look at the Moon and then at their husband through a sieve, and break the fast.
Abroad the fast follows local sunrise and moonrise, so its length is not the same as in India. Where clouds hide the Moon, many families break the fast at the calculated local moonrise time; follow your family's custom.
In 2026 the fast lasts about 11 h 36 min in London (sunrise 06:49 AM to moonrise), and about 13 h 43 min in New Delhi.
Why the date and times differ abroad
A tithi is a stretch of the Moon's journey from the Sun, so it begins and ends at the same instant everywhere. In 2026, Kartika Krishna Chaturthi begins at 01:07 AM IST on 29 October in India, which is 07:37 PM GMT on 28 October in London.
What differs is the local day: sunrise, sunset, moonrise and the clock. Karwa Chauth is kept on the day the tithi covers the local moonrise, so each city has its own times; and because the clocks differ, the tithi can begin on a different local date, so a city can keep the festival a day apart from India. Both dates are right for their place.
